Sinister (2012)

Two weeks ago, I managed to catch the premiere screening of Sinister, arguably one of the better horror films made in 2012 :)

Synopsis: True crime writer Ellison (Hawke) moves his family to a small town following up the disappearance of a young girl and hoping to score another bestseller in the process. Unbeknownst to his wife and daughter they move to the exact house where the girl’s family was executed before she vanished. Everything appears normal until Ellison finds a box of Super 8 home movies in the attic which show the family being murdered as well as others, sometimes decades apart. Through research he finds out that each executed family also had a young child that disappeared. Careful examination also reveals the presence of a dark, malevolent figure in the footage. Ellison becomes fixated on the mystery and his obsession soon puts his own family in danger.

Verdict: 7/10. In my opinion, this is one of the better horror films in 2012. Compared to Cabin in the Woods, and Chernobyl Diaries, the other movies just pales in comparison. Admittedly, I don't watch scary movies much, but even I can tell that this is a good one. I particularly think that the part where the ghosts dance around Ellison as he investigates what happened at night is a good scene, where you can actually watch it with your eyes open and not under the covers. Also, some of the scenes where "Mr. Boogie" appears is done well, that you can't help but imagine them jumping out at you at some unexpected turn.

Definitely a movie to watch :) Not too gory, but the undertones will make you shiver :)
