Review: Baker Dave at Plaza Damas 3, Sri Hartamas

Many novelty restaurants are mushrooming about town with unique value propositions until sometimes restaurateurs find it hard to find a niche to differentiate themselves.

Like many others out there, David (aka Baker Dave) is also looking to make his mark amongst the many bakeries out there. A graduate chef, he did what most youngsters do early in their life. He deviated from his field of study to become a marketer for a property developing company. After many years in that industry, he decided to quit his job and started doing what he loved (and knows) best.

What I found interesting about this particular bakery was that it gave me a coffee house feel, with the offering of cakes and pastries, on top of being a restaurant with breakfast and lunch sets.

Look at all those cakes!!!! really mouthwatering just looking at them. There are an array of cakes available for order and consumption. There is the Yin and Yang Sesame Cake (RM59), Espresso Walnut Cake (RM59), Ultimate Chocolate Cake (RM79), Almond Cake (RM59), Carrot Walnut Cake (RM59), and Chocolate Hazelnut Cake (RM59).

All their pastries, cakes, and breads are baked fresh daily, and if there are any leftovers, they will be brought back and donated to the Women's Abuse Association.

Dave started small. He started from home, making custom ordered fondant cakes. As his clientele grew, he knew he couldn't just have a home-owned business anymore. Therefore he decided to expand his business and opened up a shop as there was too much demand.

Sugar cookies (RM4.90, 5.90, or 6.90)

One thing different with Baker Dave is that they offer a kid's activity, where children can decorate cupcakes for only RM9.90 which include 2 cupcakes, 1 Vitagen drink, sprinkles and cream for the cupcakes. Their main aim is for children to have a more personal one-on-one time with their parents. Of course, this is all on request basis, and as at todate, there have been two sessions that Baker Dave has organised for parents and children. Interested? you can head on to their facebook page (link below) to find out more!

A glimpse of their menu

As I mentioned earlier, Baker Dave initially started off making fondant cakes, and they have a 'wall-of-fame' at the end of their shop with some pictures of the many fondant cakes that they have made for their customers. So if you are thinking what kind of cake to get for your loved ones, you could try this out, and don't worry, they can customise the cake into any shape or design that you want (le bb already told me he wants a DSLR camera designed cake for his birthday -.-")

Turmeric Rice set (RM16.90 nett)

For our review, we were given three sets to try out. Our first set is the Tumeric Rice which consists of a sunny side up egg, curry chicken, grilles meatloaf, blanched carrots and peas. The curry chicken was good and the meatloaf was quite tender. The rice itself was very rich in flavour, and I love those vegetables. This lunch set comes with one slice of the cake of the day and a glass of orange juice which I prefer, as this is definitely a healthier alternative to gassy drinks that most people usually order when having their meals. For that price, it is quite worth it as the dish itself was quite filling. Coupled with the cake, Dave told us that most people would just have their cake to-go as they couldn't finish all at one time.

 Pasta Marinara Lunch Set (RM16.90)

The Pasta Marinara comes with minced chicken along side home-made baked chicken meatballs and broccoli. Same as the Turmeric Rice set, this lunch set also comes with one slice of the cake of the day and a glass of orange juice.

I like that they try their best to promote healthy eating for their patrons. Their meatballs are baked and not fried the conventional way, no gassy drinks are offered. They also do not add in any MSG in their dishes, but it is still flavourful.

 English Breakfast Set (RM19.90 nett)

For the early risers, Baker Dave also has breakfast menus. The one we got to try was the English Breakfast Set made up of two sunny side up eggs, two slices of toast with butter and jam, chicken sausages, beef bacon, shiitake mushrooms and a cup of hot black coffee. If you notice closely, you will find that this set is a little different. What's the difference? They use shiitake mushrooms instead of normal brown button mushrooms. Why? because they find that the flavour given out by shiitake mushrooms are more intense compared to the normal button mushrooms. Being a mushroom lover myself, I agree :D

 Ultimate Chocolate Cake (RM9.90)

Particularly sinful, this chocolate cake is made with three layers of chocolate. Chocolate Fudge, Chocolate Mousse, and Dark Belgian Chocolate, topped with shavings of dark and white chocolate (with a little drizzle of icing sugar). One bite of this cake and you would feel like you're in chocolate heaven. I like that the cake looks so unassuming, like a simple chocolate cake. Then you take a bite and it transports you to another world. I would think this is a ninja cake :p hahahaha

Apple Crumble Cheesecake (RM8.90)

One of the best apple crumble cheesecake I had despite the not so appealing look of the cake but I was being told that they spent more time concentrating and working more towards the taste instead of the appearance of their cakes which is lacking in many bakeries nowadays.

Even though the commercial area is new and not so widely known, Baker Dave has managed to gain a following of loyal customers living around the area. If you're staying around the area, why not give this little outlet a try? I'm pretty sure you will be pleasantly surprised :)
