Have any of you guys ever felt that you don’t really need to go for hair treatments just because thinning hair or damaged hair only occurs in middle-aged, elderly people? Well, I’m here to tell you that you’re mistaken. Just because you’re young doesn’t mean that your hair isn’t damaged, and more often than not, it’s because of your lifestyle.
I used to be one of those who thought I have superbly healthy hair. Sure, I have had heavier than most hair fall and dandruff issues compared to other people, but I assumed it was mostly because I had long hair. So when 101 Hair Care approached me to ask if I would like to review their latest service, the AFT Treatment, I was a little sceptical on whether or not this product actually works, considering my hair wasn’t that much damaged to begin with, I just had a typical dandruff problem.
BOY WAS I WRONG.
I had my treatment done at the One Utama outlet, which is located in the same wing and on the same floor as Chatime, opposite Bluunis. I was greeted by the receptionist and was asked to fill up a questionnaire about my dietary habits, my hair concerns, and my lifestyle habits.
Shortly after, my hair consultant of the day, her name is Phoebe came for me and brought me to the analysis room, where they had all the latest hair analysis paraphernalia, right down to the miscroscope. What is the microscope for? Read on to find out :p
The crown of my head
First, we took a look at the crown of my head, and sad to say, it is thinning. Do you know, that a person’s hair follicles can only produce up to approximately 25-30 hair strands in its lifetime? After which, the follicles will close and will not produce any more hair.
Left is my scalp, right is a healthy scalp
Next, we took a look at my scalp, and according to Phoebe, my scalp had was very oily, and dandruff flakes. As compared to a healthy scalp, my scalp wasn’t healthy at all. Each follicle only had about one or maximum two strands of hair growing out of it. A healthy person’s hair would have about four strands of hair per follicle.
Next, we took a deeper look into the follicles, and you can clearly see the dandruff flakes and dead skin cells surrounding my follicles.
After that, she scanned my hair strands, and you could see that it was thinner than normal hair, and damaged at the sides. So don’t be fooled, even though my hair felt thick and luxurious and soft and smooth, this is actually not a reflection of how healthy my hair is. You would have to see it to believe it.
So next is where the microscope comes in. As with all other living creatures, there are also parasites living in our hair. If you’re lucky, you won’t have them. They are called Demodex Folliculorum, and lives in the hair follicles of humans. They are not really parasites per se, as they do not cause much harm to humans, but they have been thought to cause hair loss amongst people. So when Phoebe put the instrument to my head to scrape out cells from my hair follicle, I was quite apprehensive that I had Demodex as I have higher than normal hair fall. To my relief, I do not have Demodex, so that was a big burden off my shoulders. :p
This slide contains bits of my scalp from my hair follicles...brings me back to high school days
After my hair analysis, Phoebe concluded that I have oily scalp, oily dandruff, and damaged hair, which makes me a suitable candidate to try out their new AFT Treatment.
I was served with two cups of red date tea throughout my entire treatment :)
The New Advanced Follicle Technology (AFT) is a revolution breakthrough by the combination of Folli Heat Technology and Cell Reactive Herbal Mask. They use four main herbs which are Cinnamomum powder, Fo-ti Root powder, Ginseng Powder and Angelica Sinensis powder. This treatment is perfect for the prevention of gray hair and increase thickness of each existing hair strand. It is a 60 min treatment which will consists of hair wash, steaming, scalp scrubbing, AFT treatment and head massage.
So what does this treatment do?
- It balances the sebum secretion of your hair follicles
- Overcome dandruff and itchy scalp
- Prevent and mitigate symptoms of itchy scalp
- Enhance production of hair melanin
- Regeneration of hair follicle cells
- Reactivation of matrix cell
First, I was given a hair wash with the herbal shampoo and conditioner to reduce the oiliness of the scalp. The herbal shampoo has mint properties, which gives a cooling effect. The mint also soothes me, and Phoebe was very gentle when she was giving me my head and shoulder massage
During wash.....love the cooling sensation :)
After wash....with my turban :p
After my head was shampooed and conditioned, the next step was the treatment. It is the cell reactivate herbal mask step, and contains four main herbs which are Cinnamomum powder (antibacterial, control inflammation, dredge hair follicles), Fo-ti Root powder (dilation of blood vessels, reduce hair loss, elimination of free radicals), Ginseng Powder(promote hair growth, reduce sebum) and Angelica Sinensis powder (promote blood circulation, improve hair follicle cells, fully nourish hair matrix cell).
The herbal mask comes with the Reactive Ginseng Essence which is aimed at strengthening the hair roots. As it is a herbal mask, it requires hot water for the extraction of its medicinal properties, so it is hot when first applied. First, they wrapped a towel around my head like a turban, so there is a catchment in case the mixture flows down the side of my face or the top of my head. Because they only require the essence of the product, and for easy removal of the mask, they placed a piece of gauze on my head before applying the mask.
It was quite hot at first, but after a while, it was a very soothing sensation, so I wasn’t bothered much by it. Also, Phoebe had already told me that it will be hot, so I was prepared :p After application, they put another piece of gauze on top of the mask to cover it up, and they steamed my head for about 15 minutes for the essence to fully absorb into my scalp.
Scalp detox formulation
After the mask, they rinsed my hair and next applied the scalp detox. This is a deep cleansing product, aimed to prevent itchiness, remove dandruff, and remove dead skin cells. It was a warm liquid, and Phoebe used this to line my scalp, going through each part of my head thoroughly and ensuring that every part was covered.
Next came the Scalp Serum, which will strengthen the hair root, prevent hair loss, contains ginseng, and mint for a cooling effect. It’s kinda like a tonic for the hair, but the part that I liked the most was the massage that Phoebe gave me after application of the tonic. The head massage is for blood circulation and easier absorption of the tonic into the scalp.
This is the end of the treatment. Then it's blow dry time!!! They rubbed in some green tea hair cream, and thermal spray before the blow dry to protect my hair :D
Throughout the entire process, I was given a heat pack for my back to enhance blood circulation. Phoebe replaced the pack for me at least three times, and suffice to say, I was VERY comfortable.
After the entire treatment, I was lead back to the analysis room, and Phoebe showed me how my scalp looks like, and I must say, I was very impressed :)
After photos below, Left is after, right is before :) you can see my hair is healthier, and the dandruff flakes and dead skin is gone.
So there you have it, the entire AFT process and what it entails.
Personally, I think what made the experience more enjoyable for me was that I had a very good hair consultant and attendance. Phoebe was very gentle and patient with me, and she really explained everything to me so that I understood what each process meant. I really liked her disposition, and if I were to go back there again, I would ask for Phoebe one more time :)
Price: RM408. But if you make an appointment now at their outlets, you only pay RM19, AND you get a special starter kit that contains their herbal shampoo, conditioner, and serum worth RM48 for free!
Last Comments: I asked Phoebe, roughly how many times must an average person like me go through the process to ensure that I have a fully healthy scalp, and she said at least 10 times, once a week. For me, I think this is a pretty worth treatment as I did not feel any itchiness at all for at least two weeks after the entire process.
