Food Review: Pick Me Up @ Kuchai Lama

Will you "Pick Me Up"?

Just last week, I went for a Food Review at Pick Me Up Desserts at Kuchai Lama. I thought it was gonna be like another Snowflakes or UFO, but I was wrong. Pick Me Up was started two months ago by the husband and wife team, Annie and Jared.

When I entered the shop, I was impressed by the cleanliness, and simple deco.  They had chairs and sofas. Needless to say, Carina and I opted for the sofas straightaway :D

The menu was artfully done, with pictures to showcase their bestseller desserts and other offerings. There are a variety of products that they offer, not limited to only Taiwanese snacks and desserts.

The first dish served to us was the Ice-Cream burritos. Basically it was either Mango, Banana, or Oreo mixed with Vanilla Ice Cream, wrapped with popiah skin, and drizzled with Chocolate sauce on the inside. I loved this dish as it was refreshing and all the tastes of the different flavours blend well together.

Ice Cream Burritos, RM5.50 per piece

The second dish we had was this new edition Ice Tower. Still under the R&D stages, this is not out in their products offering yet. It's an ice tower made up of three distinct ice shaves, being cincau, gula melaka, and soya, with a red beans acting as separators. Toppings that come with it are taro balls, cincau, pearls, and barley. They also come with a side condiment of creamer and gula melaka.

Carina being herself, she volunteered to pour the condiments onto the ice tower...look how happy she is just pouring the condiments onto it :p The ice tower is pretty tall, and even taller than an iPhone (I'll prove it to you later :p). What I loved about this tower was the gula melaka centre. As I love cendol, the gula melaka ice shaves spoke to me :p the soya ice shaves were quite good too, and goes very well with the cincau, lending it a taste associated with what many knows as the "Michael Jackson" :D

After that, we were treated to their Chili Chic Quesadillas, Chili Chic Fries, and Cheesy Fries. The sauces for the fries were put aside, to prevent them from getting soaked in the sauces, for the benefit of those who love to sit and chat for hours with their buddies.

 Cheesy Fries, RM5.50

The Quesadillas regrettably were not served as displayed in the picture. However, as Annie and Jared pointed out to us, this was because their food photographer wanted to showcase the fillings of the Quesadilla, hence the pictured showed a fuller version. However, in reality, they can't put so much chicken as it will come out at the sides when they grill it. But after tasting it, it tastes really good :D

A close up shot of the Quesadillas which kinda looks gross and appetizing at the same time :p

We also had soft serve ice cream and frozen yogurt. Personally, the ice cream was a little too milky for me, and the froyo was too sour, but froyo lovers would love it due to its sourness :D

Soft serve Ice Cream with Cornflakes, Nata de Coco and Oreo bits, RM 5.50

Frozen Yogurt with Strawberry, Crushed peanut, and toasted oats, RM6.50

The next item on the list was the Fruity Ice Tower, which is where I will show you where it got its name. It's even taller than an iPhone, as Mikhaela has so kindly consented to demo to us :D There are three flavours in the Ice Tower, Blueberry, Mango, and Strawberry, with fruits as toppings and Vanilla Ice Cream as the separator. It's really smooth, and I love how the Ice Shaves melt in my mouth :D I love the Mango Ice shave the most :D

Next up, Cheesy Nachos and Nutella French Toast! Save the best for last indeed!

 Cheesy Nachos, RM4.50

The Nachos complement the cheese sauce well, and the Nutella French Toast with Vanilla Ice Cream is just heavenly :D The cheese is served on the side to avoid the nachos from becoming soggy, and the toasted nutella lends a refreshing blend to the cold taste of the Ice Cream.

If I were ever in Kuchai Lama area, I would definitely make this my stop for desserts after dinner :D When we were there, the crowd started coming in around 830pm plus, and it was full house all the way til 11pm! This shows what a big customer base they have, and no doubt about it, it is because their desserts are delicious!

So if you are around the area, be sure to check out Pick Me Up, and if you are feeling down, head on over, and you'll be picked up in no time! :D (Sounds cheesy and lame, but hey, whatever works :D)
