Review: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

So I realise there's been quite a few movie posts up on my blog these few weeks, but it's only because I'm a movie buff, and I love to share reviews about movies that I think are worth (or not) watching :D

This week's movie review is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey :) Thanks to Yuberactive for the free tickets!

Synopsis: Bilbo Baggins is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever ... Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities ... A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know

If, by any chance you were living under a rock and have absolutely no idea what The Hobbit is, perhaps this trailer might serve to give you a little bit of insight :p

Verdict: 9/10 :) yea, it got equal points to Les Miserables :p it was good, and it was also imbued with quite a bit of humour. If you liked Lord of the Rings, you would understand the plot, and storyline a little better, such as why the forest where Radagast was staying in started to die, and how he came about the Necromancer who could summon spirits from the grave.

I guess what's important in this movie is that Bilbo finds the One Ring (which would be the centrepiece for the LOTR trilogy), and kept it for himself. Another important point to note as for the follow up to that scene was when Bilbo spared Gollum's life, as he remembered (I imagine) what Gandalf said to him: "True courage is not about knowing when to take a life, but when to spare one."

For me, this is a part of the story that ties to LOTR, where in the first LOTR movie, Frodo asked Gandalf (when they were trapped in the Mines of Moria, which made an appearance in this movie too btw) why they didn't just kill Gollum. To which Gandalf replied, "True courage is not about knowing when to take a life, but when to spare one." And imagine the little flutter in my chest when Gandalf said the same thing to Bilbo Baggins when he was given the Elvish-made sword :)

Like how Real Steel defined the movies in 2011, the movies this year was defined by Life of Pi, Les Miserables, and The Hobbit :)

Oh, this book is a trilogy too btw, so be prepared for two more installments to come! :D

The scenery of the movie (every part of it) was breathtaking! My dad even bought home an Official Guide of the movie home, looking of those pictures makes me want to make a visit to New Zealand - particularly those places that appeared in the film. :D Can't wait for the next installment!

yup! alot of people say it's like LOTR, but I think it's different. It was rather nice seeing one or two people we know from LOTR though :)
