Movie Review: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013)

Thanks to Nuffnang, I got to catch the Premiere Screening of The Mortal Instruments two days ago. It wasn't a movie I was anticipating, and I went in having little to  no expectation of the entire thing.

Synopsis: Set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray (Lily Collins), discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother (Lena Headey), Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures. Based on the worldwide best-selling book series.

Verdict: 5.5/10. I think it was a little better than the other movies out there that have been adapted from books, like Percy Jackson or Twilight. It was still cheesy, and the storyline was predictable. There were too many plotholes, and the silliest part is that the movie is titled City of Bones, but there's only one shot of the City of Bones in the entire movie. They are much better naming it the 'Cup of Aces' or something since the entire movie revolves around the cup.

And what is a Mortal Instrument anyway? It's not properly explained in the movie at all. Just a one-liner and that's it? There is no explanation whatsoever about what a Mortal Instrument does :( So what does a ShadowHunter do and why is it so significant to be a ShadowHunter? And the Runes that she drew on her palm that disappeared, what was that all about? Nothing was properly explained, there were plotholes in abundance.

So anyways, if you guys have nothing better to watch over the weekend, then you can give this a go, it's not super bad la, it just feels more like a flick made for teenagers >.<

Til the next time, stay beautiful!

xoxo,
yin
