As you know, Kiehl's has been serving its customers the most efficacious formulas made with the finest natural ingredients for over 160 years. As a skincare brand, they have sought to develop different formulas for different skin types, and today, they have come up with their newest innovation for normal to oily skin types, which is the Ultra Facial Oil-Free range! This range is specially formulated to achieve the fine balance necessary to keep skin looking virtually shine-free for 24 hours, while also maintaining its essential moisture for a full 24 hours of fresh hydration.
Dr. Adam Geyer, Kiehl's Consulting Dermatologist, puts it in the most succinct manner possible:
“When caring for oily skin, it is important to strive for balance rather than simply using products to remove oil and degrease the skin. Although it seems counterintuitive, oily skin still needs hydration and protection of its barrier function. I frequently see patients try to reduce oil by over-drying their skin, which often leads to more oil as the skin compensates to protect its essential moisture. A product with an oil-free gel cream formula that does not add oil but maintains moisture is a good foundation for an effective skin care regimen for those with oily skin.”
How true is that? To start off, let's take a look at the Ultra Facial Oil-Free Cleanser
Ultra Facial Oil-Free Cleanser (RM85/ 150ml)
Our Ultra Facial Oil-Free Cleanser is a quick-lathering cleansing foam that thoroughly removes impurities and visibly reduces excess oil on skin’s surface, while leaving skin looking more balanced. With Imperata Cylindrica Root and Lemon Fruit Extracts, our non-stripping, sulfate-free formula leaves skin clean and refreshed without over-drying. Gentle enough for sensitive skin. Oil-free, paraben-free, fragrance-free, colorant-free.
After using it for one month, I feel that my skin is less oily over the course of the day, and I don't have to blot my face as often.
After washing with the facial wash, my skin doesn't feel tight. Even after I wipe my face dry, my skin doesn't feel dry and peeling, like some facial wash that I've tried. I don't have to use a lot of the cleanser, so I feel that this tube can easily last me five to six months, or even more. For RM85 a tube, I would say it's really quite worth it.
Ultra Facial Oil-Free Toner (RM85/ 250ml)
Our Ultra Facial Oil-Free Toner is formulated to visibly reduce excess oil on skin’s surface, while leaving it instantly fresh and healthy looking. Made with Imperata Cylindrica Root Extract and Antarcticine to soothe and hydrate skin, our non-drying alcohol-free formula gently removes any remaining residue, dirt and oil without stripping skin of vital moisture. PH-balanced, and tested for safety and gentleness. Oil-free, paraben-free, fragrance-free, colorant-free.
The toner doesn't dry out my skin either, and I don't have to use a lot as well to ensure that my skin is wiped clean of impurities.
Facial Gel Cream (RM100/ 59ml)
This Facial Gel Cream is Kiehl's star product which was just launched last February. It has a refreshing new formula that conditions normal to oily skin for 24 hours of clean-feeling hydration.
Formulated with moisture replenishing Imperata Cylindrica Root Extract and Antarcticine to help skin retain moisture plus skin fresheners to invigorate skin’s look and feel. Used daily, this virtually weightless gel cream minimizes the appearance of oil making skin more resistant to daily shine and greasiness. With a burst of fresh, long-lasting hydration, our formula strengthens normal to oily skin’s moisture barrier leaving it smooth, velvety soft and shine free. Oil-free, paraben-free, fragrance-free, colorant-free. Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream Fresh Hydration, a new, refreshing, non-sticky formula that conditions normal to oily skin for a full 24 hours of fresh-feeling hydration. It is also fragrance-free and will not leave a residue. Used daily, this lightweight gel cream minimizes the appearance of shine.
The moisturising gel is non-oily to the touch and easily spreads across my skin, being fully absorbed after a few pats. My skin feels really moisturised after using it, and my face doesn't become very oily over the course of the day. My skin is visibly hydrated, and feels very soft to the touch! After using it for a few weeks, my face's oiliness is controlled, mostly due to my skin being hydrated, so it doesn't have to secrete oil to retain the moisture in my face.
In fact, in consumer tests (from a panel of 50 women, ages 18-35, with normal to oily skin and enlarged pores) after 1 week:
- 94% of women said their skin felt moisturized;
- 90% said their skin did not feel oily or greasy;
- 86% said skin felt refreshed;
- 86% said their skin appeared more balanced.

If you're not sure if this range is the range for you, you can always try first before you buy it :) Kiehl's practices a 'try before you buy' policy which is something I really like. You can head over to their stores for a skin consultancy, and they will give you five samples to try out before you decide whether or not you want to purchase their products.
I would say that the combination of these three products have helped to lessen the oiliness in my skin, on top of keeping it moisturised. I am very satisfied with the results, and I will definitely get this product again after it has finished. As Kiehl's has helped me with my acne problem, they have helped me once again with my combination oily face :D Now to move on to Micro-Blur Sun Protector, a product I've been told can work miracles in tightening your pores in the long run :)
